JASON GLASSER

FRUITKEY

Version française

"When I was asked to curate the annualsolo exhibition programmed by triangle at the gallery of the Friche Belle de Mai in Marseille, I immediately thought that at last this was a rare opportunity to wear two hats at once- as President of triangle France, and as director of Parker’s Box, the New York gallery that I opened in 2000. I also immediately knew which artist I wanted the art community of Marseille to experience, following that of New York.
(...)
The third episode of the trilogy of exhibitions represented in this catalogue, took place at the Chapelle Saint Jacques Contemporary Art Center in Saint Gaudens in the French Pyrenees, under the curatorship of the Center’s director, Valerie Charrier. It was the third episode also of the encounter of Jason Glasser’s work with three different architectural venues steeped in histories as varied as the artist’s sources of inspiration (Horace Pippin, Don Van Vliet, Marc Ribot, Hank Williams, Bruce Nauman, Arthur Dove, Jim Jarmusch, Giotto… to name just a few from a very long list).
Jason Glasser makes symphonies - of paintings (on walls, windscreens, canvas or glass), videos (projected or on monitors), and of drawings, collages, cutouts, music, sound, etc. All of these seem to use osmosis to feed off the different identities of each exhibition venue.
In this way, the childlike hunters and the dancing centaurs, the soldiers and cowboys, the airplanes and birds, the monkey on a bicycle and the tree with blinking eyes, or even the skull and the big-eyed egg, all seem as much at home in the ex-American Billiards Academy, in the former State tobacco factory or in the old romanesque church.
No doubt it’s just a coincidence that spirituality and playing games as well as political hypocrisy, are three of the subjects frequently hovering under the surface in Glasser’s oeuvre that is clearly as cameleon as it is deep."
